Bitcoin Cash was created in August 2017 when part of the Bitcoin community split off over how to scale the network. Their answer was bigger blocks: where Bitcoin kept blocks small to stay highly decentralized, Bitcoin Cash raised the limit so more transactions fit in each block, keeping fees very low even when the network is busy.

The goal is to be usable as everyday electronic cash. BCH transactions typically cost a fraction of a cent and confirm quickly, which suits payments, tipping and merchant use. It keeps the core Bitcoin design, including Proof-of-Work mining and the same 21 million supply cap.

Over the years Bitcoin Cash has added features such as smart-contract capabilities and tokens, while remaining focused on cheap, reliable payments rather than complex applications. It has its own community and development teams independent of Bitcoin.

BCH is listed on essentially every major exchange and is easy to buy and spend with fiat. Like all cryptocurrencies it is volatile, and it competes both with Bitcoin and with newer low-fee payment networks.
