Coinbase review

Coinbase has carried the same pitch since 2012: crypto without the scary parts. The interface is the cleanest in the industry, fiat rails are deep (ACH, SEPA, Faster Payments, cards, PayPal, Apple Pay), and as a NASDAQ-listed company (COIN), it publishes audited financials at a level of transparency no offshore exchange matches. It holds licenses across the US, an EU MiCA license, and FCA registration in the UK.

The trade-off is price. The simple Buy button bundles a spread plus fees that can total 2-4% on card purchases, among the highest in the industry. The fix is using Coinbase Advanced (built into the same account), where maker/taker fees start at 0.60%/0.40% under $10k volume and fall from there. Funding by free ACH or SEPA transfer and buying via Advanced makes Coinbase genuinely cost-competitive.

Security is the strongest argument: the vast majority of customer assets sit in cold storage, the platform has never suffered a material hack in over a decade, USD balances carry FDIC pass-through insurance for US customers, and Coinbase Custody safeguards assets for most US spot Bitcoin ETFs, institutional validation no rival can claim.

Coin selection (250+) skews conservative; Coinbase lists carefully given US regulatory exposure, so you won't find every long-tail token (no BNB or TRX, for instance). Staking is built in for ETH, SOL, ADA, and more, and the Base layer-2 network gives Coinbase users cheap on-chain access. Customer support, long the weak point, has improved with 24/7 chat but still draws complaints at peak times.
