What is XRP?
XRP was created in 2012 by the founders of what became Ripple, the company that uses the XRP Ledger for institutional cross-border payments. Unlike Bitcoin, XRP does not rely on mining; all 100 billion coins were created at launch, and the network reaches consensus through a set of independent validators.
The XRP Ledger settles transactions in 3–5 seconds with fees of a fraction of a cent, which is why XRP is positioned as a bridge asset for moving money between currencies and countries. Banks and payment providers use Ripple's services in regions where traditional correspondent banking is slow or expensive.
XRP spent years in the shadow of the SEC's 2020 lawsuit against Ripple. A 2023 court ruling found that XRP itself is not a security when sold on exchanges, and the case fully concluded in 2025, restoring US exchange listings and clearing the way for XRP-based investment products.
Today, XRP is consistently a top-five cryptocurrency by market capitalization. It is especially popular in Japan and Korea, and is widely available on fiat exchanges worldwide.
