Smart contracts cannot read data from outside their own blockchain on their own. Chainlink, launched in 2017, solves that with a decentralized oracle network: independent operators fetch real-world information such as prices, exchange rates and event outcomes and deliver it on-chain in a tamper-resistant way.

That infrastructure quietly underpins much of decentralized finance. Lending platforms, derivatives and stablecoins rely on Chainlink price feeds to know what assets are worth, and its Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) connects separate blockchains and even traditional financial systems.

LINK is the token that pays node operators for supplying accurate data and that operators stake as a security bond. Demand for LINK is tied to how much the wider crypto and tokenized-asset economy depends on reliable off-chain data, which has grown steadily over the years.

Because LINK is an ERC-20 token rather than a base-layer coin, it is available on nearly every major exchange and easy to buy with fiat. As with any crypto asset, its price is volatile and not guaranteed by the utility it provides.
