Cosmos launched in 2019 with a vision of many sovereign blockchains that can communicate, rather than one chain doing everything. Its Inter-Blockchain Communication protocol (IBC) lets separate chains pass tokens and data between each other, earning Cosmos the nickname the Internet of Blockchains.

Its toolkit is widely used. The Cosmos SDK and the fast CometBFT consensus make it straightforward to launch a custom, application-specific blockchain, and many well-known networks were built using Cosmos technology. Each chain keeps its own validators and governance while remaining able to connect through IBC.

ATOM is the native token of the Cosmos Hub, the central chain in the ecosystem. It is staked to secure the Hub through Proof-of-Stake and used for governance voting. Because the wider ecosystem is made of independent chains with their own tokens, ATOM captures the Hub's role rather than all activity across Cosmos.

ATOM is listed on most major exchanges and is easy to buy with fiat, and staking is widely available with relatively high participation. Its supply is uncapped with inflation funding staking rewards, and like all crypto its price is volatile.
