Hedera went live in 2019 with a different design from most blockchains. Instead of a chain of blocks it uses hashgraph, a consensus method that orders transactions through a gossip protocol, giving it high throughput, low fixed fees and fast finality with strong security guarantees.

Its standout feature is governance. Hedera is overseen by the Hedera Council, a group of large organisations from technology, finance and academia that take turns running network nodes. That structure is designed to appeal to enterprises that want a public network with known, accountable operators.

HBAR, the native token, pays the small predictable fees for transactions and smart contracts and is staked to help secure the network. Supply is capped at 50 billion HBAR, released gradually, and the network is used for payments, tokenized assets and supply-chain tracking.

HBAR is listed on many major exchanges and is cheap to transact, making it easy to buy with fiat. As with all crypto, its price is volatile and not guaranteed by its enterprise backing.
