NEAR Protocol launched in 2020 with a focus on making blockchains easy to use. It offers human-readable account names instead of long wallet addresses, low fees and fast confirmations, aiming to lower the barriers that keep mainstream users away from crypto apps.
Under the hood, NEAR scales through a sharding design called Nightshade, which splits the network into parts that process transactions in parallel so capacity grows as usage rises. More recently NEAR has positioned itself around user-owned AI and as a coordination layer across chains.
NEAR, the native token, pays transaction fees, is staked to secure the network through Proof-of-Stake, and is used in governance. Supply is uncapped with modest inflation for staking rewards, and a portion of fees is burned, so net issuance is limited.
NEAR is listed on most major exchanges and is easy to buy with fiat, and many exchanges offer NEAR staking. As a competitive layer-1 it carries real adoption but also strong rivals, and its price is volatile like any crypto asset.
