The basics

What is Polkadot?

Polkadot launched in 2020, designed by Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood to solve a problem he saw clearly: blockchains struggle to talk to each other. Polkadot is built as a network of many chains that share a single security layer, letting specialized blockchains connect and communicate rather than compete in isolation.

Its central relay chain secures and coordinates the connected chains, which can be tailored for specific uses such as DeFi, identity or gaming. The 2024 move to a model called Agile Coretime made it cheaper and more flexible for projects to access that shared security and blockspace.

DOT, the native token, is used for staking to secure the network, for on-chain governance where holders vote on upgrades and treasury spending, and for bonding new chains. Polkadot uses a nominated Proof-of-Stake system with one of the larger staking participation rates in crypto.

DOT is widely listed and easy to buy with fiat, and most major exchanges offer DOT staking. Its supply is uncapped with modest inflation, and like all crypto its price is volatile and can fall sharply.
