Where to buy Polygon

Polygon began in 2019 as Matic Network, built to relieve Ethereum's high fees and congestion. Its Proof-of-Stake chain became one of the most widely used networks in crypto, offering transactions that cost cents while staying compatible with Ethereum, which attracted major brands, games and payment projects.

In 2024 Polygon upgraded its token from MATIC to POL as part of Polygon 2.0, a broader plan to link many Polygon chains through a shared settlement layer called AggLayer. The aim is to let value and users move smoothly across connected chains as if they were one network.

POL is the native token of this ecosystem. It pays transaction fees, is staked to secure the network and validators, and is designed to secure multiple chains within the Polygon system. It has modest ongoing issuance for rewards rather than a fixed cap.

POL is listed on most major exchanges and is easy to buy with fiat, and staking is widely available. Existing MATIC holders were migrated to POL. Like all crypto, its price is volatile and can move sharply with the market.
