Ethereum's largest corporate holders launch Ethlabs research hub as foundation faces departures

Five former Ethereum Foundation researchers launched Ethlabs, a new nonprofit R&D organization backed by SharpLink, Bitmine, Consensys CEO Joe Lubin and Anchorage Digital. The move signals a shift toward a multi-node development model as the Ethereum Foundation sees senior departures.

  • Ethlabs is led by five former senior Ethereum Foundation contributors including Ansgar Dietrichs and Barnabe Monnot
  • SharpLink and Bitmine, two of the largest corporate ETH holders, are funding the organization alongside Joe Lubin
  • The launch comes after Ethereum Foundation co-executive director Hsiao-Wei Wang stepped down last week
  • Ethlabs will focus on faster transaction settlement, expanding capacity and improving institutional infrastructure
  • Joe Lubin described the shift as a move toward a 'multi-node' development model with independent steward organizations
