Coinbase Wallet Review

Coinbase Wallet is the easiest on-ramp from buying crypto to truly owning it. It's important to understand it's a separate product from the Coinbase exchange app: the exchange holds keys for you, while Coinbase Wallet is fully self-custody — your keys and recovery phrase stay on your device, and Coinbase cannot access your funds. For the millions who start on the Coinbase exchange, it's the most natural step into self-custody.

The experience is the most beginner-friendly in self-custody. Moving assets from your Coinbase exchange account into the wallet is nearly frictionless, and the app supports a broad multichain range — Bitcoin, Ethereum and EVM chains, Solana, Dogecoin, and more — plus a dApp browser, swaps, NFTs, and tight integration with Base, Coinbase's fast, low-cost Ethereum layer-2. Usernames instead of long addresses make sending less intimidating.

The trade-offs: unlike MetaMask and Trust Wallet, Coinbase Wallet is not fully open-source, and as a hot wallet it carries the usual internet-exposure risk. It also leans toward the Coinbase and Base ecosystem, which is a plus if you use them and a mild lock-in if you don't. But for beginners who already trust Coinbase and want a gentle, well-designed introduction to holding their own keys, it's an excellent free choice — and it connects to Ledger for added security.

What we liked

  • Easiest path from the Coinbase exchange into self-custody
  • Free, beginner-friendly, multichain
  • Deep Base layer-2 integration; usernames over addresses
  • dApp browser, swaps, NFTs, and Ledger support

What to watch

  • Not fully open-source
  • Hot wallet — not for large long-term holdings
  • Tilts toward the Coinbase / Base ecosystem

Our verdict

The friendliest self-custody wallet for beginners, especially Coinbase exchange users taking their first step to holding their own keys. Free and polished — connect it to a Ledger and move large balances to cold storage.
