MetaMask Review

MetaMask is the front door to Web3. With over 30 million monthly users, it's the default wallet for interacting with Ethereum and the broader ecosystem of decentralized apps — if a DeFi protocol, NFT marketplace, or on-chain game supports a wallet, it supports MetaMask first. It's free, open-source, and fully non-custodial: your keys and seed phrase live on your device, not on Consensys's servers.

Historically EVM-only, MetaMask has expanded into a genuinely multichain wallet, adding native support for Solana and Bitcoin alongside Ethereum and every EVM network (Polygon, Arbitrum, Base, BNB Chain, and more). It bundles in token swaps, ETH staking, an NFT gallery, and a dApp browser on mobile, plus 'Snaps' — plugins that extend it to additional chains. For everyday on-chain activity, it's hard to beat the convenience and compatibility.

The crucial caveat is the nature of a hot wallet: because MetaMask runs on an internet-connected device, it's inherently more exposed than cold storage. The keys are only as safe as the machine they're on, and MetaMask users are prime phishing targets. The right setup pairs it with a hardware wallet — MetaMask connects to Ledger and Trezor, so you get its unmatched dApp access while keys stay offline on the device. Used that way, it's both the most useful and a properly secured wallet.

What we liked

  • The default wallet for DeFi, NFTs, and dApps
  • Free, open-source, fully non-custodial
  • Now multichain: Ethereum + EVM, Solana, and Bitcoin
  • Connects to Ledger and Trezor for cold-storage security

What to watch

  • Hot wallet — exposed to malware and phishing
  • A frequent target for scams and fake sites
  • In-app swap fees are higher than going direct

Our verdict

Essential for anyone using Web3 — the most compatible self-custody wallet there is, and free. Just treat it as a hot wallet: connect it to a Ledger or Trezor for any meaningful balance rather than storing large sums in the extension alone.

MetaMask FAQ

MetaMask is safe as software — it's open-source and non-custodial, so you control your keys. But it's a hot wallet on an internet-connected device, so it's exposed to phishing and malware. For larger holdings, connect it to a hardware wallet.
