Trezor Safe 5 Review

The Trezor Safe 5 is the wallet to beat for anyone who values transparency. Trezor pioneered the hardware wallet in 2014 and remains fully open-source — every line of firmware is public and auditable, so you don't have to trust the manufacturer's word that the device does what it claims. The Safe 5 pairs that openness with, for the first time in Trezor's flagship line, a certified EAL6+ secure element to resist physical extraction attacks.

It's also Trezor's most approachable device. The vibrant color touchscreen with haptic feedback makes setup and confirmation genuinely pleasant, and the Trezor Suite desktop and web app is clean and privacy-respecting (it can route through Tor). The Safe 5 supports thousands of coins including Bitcoin, Ethereum and ERC-20s, Cardano, Solana, and Litecoin, and its passphrase and Shamir Backup options give advanced users serious recovery flexibility.

Two honest caveats: native staking and NFT galleries are weaker than Ledger's — Trezor leans on third-party integrations rather than baking these into Suite — and XRP support has historically been intermittent. But for the core job of a hardware wallet, securing Bitcoin and major assets with fully auditable code and a top-tier secure element, the Safe 5 is our editor's choice. If you want open-source above all, this is the one.

What we liked

  • Fully open-source firmware — independently auditable
  • Certified EAL6+ secure element
  • Color touchscreen with haptics; very beginner-friendly
  • Shamir Backup and passphrase for advanced recovery

What to watch

  • Weaker native staking and NFT support than Ledger
  • USB-C only — no Bluetooth
  • XRP support has been intermittent

Our verdict

The best open-source hardware wallet: auditable firmware, a real secure element, and the friendliest touchscreen Trezor has made. Pick it over Ledger if transparency matters most; choose Ledger if you want native staking and NFTs.
